What's SEL?
Here's a brief resource that explains the 5 core competencies of SEL (Social & Emotional Learning): SEL Competencies

Summary:
NBTHS will focus on ways to promote SEL skill development in our school & will attempt to demonstrate the connection between SEL & Mental Health. On 3/11/22, Our staff will be encouraged to focus on the "Social Awareness" competency by demonstrating the SEL skills of Gratitude, Empathy, & Service to others. Students will be challenged and encouraged by the staff to do something for someone else to help nurture these same skills.

SEL & Mental Health Connection:
Research shows SEL is associated with a positive impact on important mental health variables that increase children's attachment to school & their motivation to learn. Strengthening any SEL skills can help reduce risky behaviors. Positive SEL skills are protective factors for mental health.

How You & Your Student Can Participate:

  • Please take a look at this resource, "The Great Student Rubric" which is a tool students can use to help strengthen & evaluate their SEL skills. Find ways to support SEL skills at home by using this rubric!
  • There's a strong connection between SEL & mental health. Staff & students are encouraged to wear green on 3/11/22. Why? Green is the color used for awareness in mental health & it symbolizes the continual recognition of the need to help fight the stigma that is often associated with it.
  • Staff who participate by wearing green will be encouraged to make a small donation for local a cause that supports food insecurity.  (Food insecurity is associated with a higher risk of mental health issues like anxiety and depression.) When students see staff wearing green, they'll know that this is our way of demonstrating the SEL skills of Gratitude, Empathy, & Service to others.  Participate at home by asking your child how she/he/they can show gratitude, empathy, & service to others.
  • This SEL Toolkit is a useful resource providing many ways students can understand & practice the SEL skills of Gratitude, Empathy, & Service.
  • Simple strategy? Talk to your child about how you have practiced gratitude, empathy, and service & why it's important!
